The South Korean prosecutor’s office has announced that President Yun Sook-young has been suspected of treason and abuse of power. This was reported by Yonhap on Sunday, 8 December.

The investigation is related to numerous complaints about Yoon’s actions, in particular in the context of his decision to declare martial law. According to Park Se-hyun, the head of the special headquarters investigating the case, the investigation was launched in response to numerous complaints from citizens.

Background

Earlier, the country’s prosecutor’s office arrested former Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun on suspicion of treason. His case is related to the same circumstances as the president’s actions during the declaration of martial law.

The charges against Yoon include allegations of abuse of power, which could have serious consequences for the country’s constitutional order.

Political context

The investigation against the current president is unprecedented in South Korea’s modern history. Political observers note that the situation could significantly affect the stability of the government and cause a wave of protests among both supporters and opponents of Yoon.

The investigation is ongoing, and so far the prosecutor’s office has not provided any further details. New details of this high-profile case are expected to be made public in the coming days.
