The Canadian Parliament has decided to allocate 764 million Canadian dollars (approximately 587 million US dollars) to provide military assistance to Ukraine. This was reported by Time Ukraine Israel, citing Ukrinform.
New budget support package
These funds were part of a large budget package that provides for additional Canadian government spending of CAD 21 billion on various strategic goals, including strengthening national defence.
Canadian Defence Minister Bill Blair stressed that the funds will be used to purchase ammunition, organise training for the Ukrainian military, and other critical means necessary to achieve Ukraine’s victory.
Additional support measures
In addition to military assistance, the Canadian government has earmarked C$400 million (US$307 million) for financial support to Ukraine. These funds are being allocated from a special account of the International Monetary Fund.
The Canadian parliament also approved 45 million Canadian dollars (35 million US dollars) for humanitarian demining and cyber resilience in Ukraine.
Political challenges
It is worth noting that the opposition Conservative Party, which has been actively calling for the government’s resignation, voted against the approval of the additional spending. Nevertheless, the budget increase was approved on the last day allowed by law.
The decision still needs to be approved by the Senate of Canada before it can come into force. The vote is expected to take place in the near future.
Canada is a leader in supporting Ukraine
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression in February 2022, Canada has already provided $5.4 billion in budget support to Ukraine. This is the highest per capita figure in the world.
In addition to financial assistance, Canada imposed sanctions on nine other Russian citizens for their involvement in crimes against the Ukrainian people.
This new aid package reaffirms Canada’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight for freedom and territorial integrity. The decisions are of strategic importance for both Ukraine’s defence capabilities and its resilience in the international arena.
