Representatives of the five nuclear powers – the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France and China – held multilateral consultations in Dubai to improve mutual understanding of nuclear doctrines. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China.
The purpose of the meeting
The consultations were chaired by China, which currently leads the P5+1 format. According to representatives of the Chinese side, the main goal of the meeting was to avoid possible miscalculations and misunderstandings between the nuclear powers.
“Such discussions allow nuclear powers to better understand each other’s positions, reducing the risks of escalating conflicts,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
Preliminary consultations
This is the first full-fledged meeting during China’s one-year presidency. Prior to this, similar consultations were held in Cairo last June, organised by the United States. At that time, the meeting was held at the level of military and diplomatic experts, and Russia also participated.
The situation in the world
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), as of January 2023, nine countries possessed a total of 12,512 nuclear warheads. This underscores the importance of multilateral dialogue on nuclear security, especially against the backdrop of rising global tensions.
