Norway plans to allocate 2.7 billion kroner (about $242 million) to strengthen the defence capabilities of the Ukrainian Navy and counter threats from the Russian Black Sea Fleet. This was stated by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Reuters reports.
“Protecting Ukraine’s civilian population and infrastructure from attacks by the Russian Black Sea Fleet is extremely important. It is equally important to ensure the security of exports of Ukrainian grain and other goods that bring significant revenue to the country,” the Prime Minister stressed.
Innovation and autonomy: key areas of focus
The bulk of the allocated funds will be used to develop innovative technologies and autonomous capabilities within the Maritime Capabilities Coalition, launched by Norway and the UK last year. The aim of this initiative is to integrate the Ukrainian navy with the systems of Western allies.
What the support will include
The funding will include:
- Contributions from the Norwegian Armed Forces: transfer of military equipment from existing stocks.
- Industrial procurement: equipment and machinery will be purchased specifically for donation to Ukraine.
- Mineaction operations: ensuring security in the Black Sea.
- Military training: training of Ukrainian sailors and technical support.
This assistance is part of Western partners’ efforts to strengthen security in the region and help Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
