China and the United States can achieve “great things” through cooperation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a conference in Beijing on Tuesday. This statement came a few weeks before the inauguration of new US President Donald Trump, scheduled for 20 January. This was reported by AFP.
Wang Yi stressed the need to maintain a dialogue between the two global giants, highlighting the success of joint initiatives in financial cooperation and the fight against drug trafficking.
“These examples demonstrate that when China and the US work together, we can achieve incredible results,” the Chinese diplomat said.
Escalation against the backdrop of the Taiwan issue
Relations between Washington and Beijing remain tense, particularly over Taiwan, which China considers its territory. Recently, Taiwanese authorities reported large-scale military exercises around the island, but Beijing has not officially confirmed these actions.
At the same time, the United States, despite the official “one China” policy, remains the main supplier of weapons to Taipei, which causes severe dissatisfaction on the part of China.
“China’s policy towards the United States remains unchanged,” Wang Yi said. According to him, Beijing seeks stability in bilateral relations, but strongly opposes “illegal aggressive actions and interference in China’s internal affairs”.
“We must firmly and decisively defend our legitimate rights and interests, protecting the fundamental principles of international relations,” the diplomat added.
A call for a new US government
China’s Foreign Minister expressed hope for constructive cooperation with the Donald Trump administration, which will soon occupy the White House.
“We hope that the new US government will make the right choice, move in the same direction as China, overcome obstacles, and ensure the stable, healthy, and long-term development of our bilateral relations,” Wang Yi concluded.
These statements demonstrate Beijing’s willingness to engage in dialogue amid global challenges, but also underscore China’s unwavering position on issues it considers to be in its strategic interests, including Taiwan.
