Ukraine is preparing to launch a joint project to produce Japanese pickup trucks using large-scale assembly technology (SKD) with the prospect of switching to small-scale production (CKD). This was announced by Minister of Economy Yulia Svyrydenko, the press service of the Ministry of Economy reports.
Key details of the project:
- Partnership with Japan:
Together with Ukrainian manufacturers, a Japanese engineering company will launch the production of pick-up trucks. The project will start with SKD (large assembly), but in the future it is planned to move to CKD (small assembly). - A signal for investors:
According to the Minister, this project is a positive signal for other Japanese investors who can localise their technologies and production in Ukraine in cooperation with local companies. - Investment support:
- Currently, more than 40 Japanese companies are already operating in Ukraine.

Financial assistance from Japan:
- Japan has contributed $36 million to the SURE Trust Fund, which strengthens MIGA’s capabilities.
- In total, Japan has allocated about €1.25 billion through NEXI initiatives, providing financial support to Japanese companies to operate in Ukraine.
- Active involvement of Japanese international cooperation agencies JICA and JICS in projects to help Ukraine.
Prospects for cooperation:
- The Ministry of Economy is looking forward to strengthening the partnership between the Ukrainian ECA and Japan’s NEXI to mobilise capital.
- Cooperation with Japanese businesses opens up the possibility of attracting technology in key sectors of Ukraine’s economy.
This project is an important step towards industrialising Ukraine and attracting foreign investment amid the challenges of war and economic recovery.
