US President-elect Donald Trump has suggested that Turkey will become a “key force” in the future of Syria after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. According to the Hürriyet Daily News, Trump made these statements while speaking to journalists at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

“Nobody knows what’s going to happen with Syria, but I think Turkey is going to be key,” Trump said.

The future US president also praised his relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, calling him “very smart” and emphasising Turkey’s military power.

“Erdogan is a man with whom I get on very well. He has built a very strong, powerful army that has not been depleted by war. He’s a very smart guy,” Trump added.

Trump also called Bashar al-Assad a “butcher”, emphasising the numerous victims that resulted from his rule.
