The Pechersk District Court of Kyiv has ruled to extend the term of detention of prominent businessman Ihor Kolomoisky until 9 February 2025. This decision was made as part of the investigation into the attempted murder of lawyer Serhiy Karpenko. This was reported by Time Ukraine Israel portal, citing Liga.net.

The 2003 assassination attempt case

The attempted murder of lawyer Serhii Karpenko took place in 2003 in Crimea. According to the investigation, Karpenko refused to help Kolomoisky gain control of the Dniprospetsstal plant. As a result of the attack, the lawyer was stabbed three times, but survived.

The four perpetrators of this crime were detained and subsequently sentenced to prison terms ranging from six to 12 years.

Attempts to punish the customer

In 2005, the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office charged Kolomoisky with ordering an assassination attempt on Karpenko. However, the investigation was delayed and the case was not brought to a logical conclusion.

The development of the case received a new impetus in 2014, when investigator Ihor Sholodko, who was leading the case, was killed while defending Donetsk airport. In 2015, the then Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin announced that the case against Kolomoisky would be reopened. Moreover, the details of this episode were discussed in the High Court of London during the trial between Kolomoisky and Victor Pinchuk.

New development in 2024

On 8 May 2024, Ihor Kolomoisky was suspected of organising a contract killing. This was another twist in a case that has lasted more than two decades. Kolomoisky currently remains in custody, awaiting further court hearings.

These developments demonstrate the readiness of the Ukrainian law enforcement system to investigate crimes, regardless of the political or social status of the suspects.
