On Saturday, farmers in South Korea staged a large-scale protest demanding the arrest of ousted President Yun Suk-young. The action, which attracted considerable attention from local and international media, began with an attempt to reach the presidential residence in the centre of Seoul using tractors and trucks, EFE reports.

Despite the protesters’ efforts, the police blocked their way on the outskirts of the capital, citing potential traffic problems. To do this, law enforcement officers used buses to block the main roads, causing traffic jams in the area. Some farmers managed to make their way to Seoul on tractors, but no arrests were made.

The protesters claimed that their rights were being violated and vowed to continue their action. They are opposed to Yun Suk-yol, who was suspended last week over his attempt to impose martial law in early December.

The events surrounding the farmers’ protest have become another signal of tensions in the country, which have been rising since the scandal with the president.
