Between 10am on 22 December and 9am on 23 December, the Russian Federation launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine using 72 drones, including Shahed and other models. Ukrainian air defence successfully destroyed 47 of them, the Ukrainian Air Force reported.

Areas of attack and air defence operations

The drones were launched from the Russian regions of Bryansk and Orel. They were involved in repelling the attacks:

  • anti-aircraft missile troops;
  • electronic warfare (EW) units;
  • mobile firing groups of the Air Force and the Defence Forces of Ukraine.

As of 9am on 23 December, the destruction of drones in nine regions of Ukraine was confirmed: Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytsky and Odesa.

In addition, 25 simulator drones were lost along the route without any negative consequences for Ukraine.

Consequences of the shelling

The attack damaged private businesses and houses in Khmelnytsky and Kyiv regions. There were no casualties, and the victims are being provided with the necessary assistance.

Nighttime attacks the day before

Russia continues regular massive shelling of Ukrainian territory, using kamikaze drones, ballistic missiles, artillery and aircraft. The main targets remain critical infrastructure and densely populated areas.

In particular, on the night of 22 December, the enemy attacked with 103 drones, 52 of which were shot down by air defence forces. Another 44 imitator drones failed without causing any damage.

Russia’s attacks are becoming increasingly large-scale and targeted, but the effective work of the Ukrainian Air Force demonstrates its high ability to withstand the enemy. Ukraine continues to hold the line, protecting civilians and critical infrastructure.
