The Romanian Ministry of Defence (MApN) said on Wednesday, 25 December, that there is no evidence that the Russian missile that hit Ukraine’s Chernivtsi region crossed Romanian airspace. This was in response to a statement by the Ukrainian side, which had previously reported the incident, Hotnews reports.
What happened?
- Ukraine: Ukraine’s Air Force said that a Russian cruise missile may have passed through Moldova and Romania before hitting Chernivtsi.
- Telegram channels: Independent monitoring resources reported that the missile travelled about 140 km through Moldova and Romania, crossing the Moldovan border near the town of Yampil (Vinnytsia region) and entering Romania near the town of Daraban.
Position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania
The Ministry of Defence of Romania reported:
- Airborne monitoring systems, including those integrated into NATO, did not detect any crossings of Romanian airspace.
- Information provided by NATO member states also does not confirm this incident.
Nevertheless, the Romanian military continues to investigate to clarify all the circumstances.
Security situation
Romania stressed that its forces, together with NATO allies, remain on high alert to protect the country’s and the Alliance’s airspace.
Bucharest stressed its readiness to cooperate with Ukraine and NATO partners to effectively respond to security threats in the region.
