During an interview on Christmas Day, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called Russian President Vladimir Putin an “honest partner” of Budapest, despite the massive missile attacks that Russia launched on Ukrainian cities over the holiday period. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said this on X network, expressing outrage at Orban’s statement.

Tusk also drew attention to the fact that Hungary has granted political asylum to former Polish official Marcin Romanowski, who is wanted for corruption offences. In his post, Tusk noted that Romanowski had learnt the Hungarian Christmas wishes “Bolgott Karácsonyt” (Merry Christmas).

Orban’s statement resonated because it contrasts with the international position on Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine.
