US President-elect Donald Trump’s team has begun preparations for his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine. This was reported by Mike Waltz, a candidate for the post of National Security Advisor, in an interview with ABC News.
Waltz noted that no agreement can be reached without dialogue with the other side, and that active diplomatic efforts will take place in the coming months. He also raised the issue of President Zelenskyy’s involvement in the talks, hinting at the possibility of his involvement and the phone calls expected in the coming days.
Waltz paid special attention to the situation at the frontline and Ukraine’s contribution to stabilising the situation. He emphasised the need to recruit new military forces, despite the existing problems with mobilisation and the conscription age, which is actually 25 years old.
In addition, Waltz commented on the ceasefire, expressing hope that it would be a positive step for both sides and help move to more constructive negotiations. He also gave a realistic assessment of the possibility of withdrawal of Russian troops, in particular from Crimea, and stressed the importance of the international community accepting the existing reality in order to achieve peace and avoid escalation of the conflict.
Such activity and approach to conflict resolution may mean a new stage in the resolution of the Ukrainian issue in the international arena, which will require not only political will but also a willingness to compromise from all participants.
