The German government is still working on a three-billion-euro aid package for Ukraine, but the process is being delayed by fiscal difficulties. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said this during a visit to Kyiv, RBC-Ukraine reports.
Budgetary challenges
According to Pistorius, internal negotiations within the government are ongoing, but the main problem is the lack of funds in the budget.
“This is a matter of funds that are not there. This is a fiscal problem, and we need to find a solution. We are making efforts to secure funding,” the minister said.
The German government had planned to allocate these funds as a surplus to plan, similar to the mechanisms used previously. However, Chancellor Olaf Scholz did not support this idea, which caused a delay.
Reliability of support
Pistorius stressed that regardless of the composition of the government after the 23 February Bundestag elections, support for Ukraine will remain stable:
“There is no doubt that Germany will continue to be a reliable partner for Ukraine.”
The list of weapons has already been submitted
The Ukrainian side has already submitted a list of required weapons to Germany. It was expected that the aid package would be agreed before the elections, but the timeline is now being pushed back.
