Apple has announced the temporary disabling of one of the new features of its generative artificial intelligence (AI) system Apple Intelligence. The decision was made after the discovery of serious errors in the function and a complaint from the BBC in December, AFP reports.
Launched two years after OpenAI’s breakthrough with ChatGPT, Apple Intelligence was intended to provide users with summaries of news and messages from apps. However, after a software update on Thursday, this feature became temporarily unavailable. Apple has promised to restore it once it is improved.
Problems in the work and a complaint to the BBC
In December, Apple Intelligence generated a message attributing a series of false news stories to BBC News. In particular, it was claimed that the BBC website had published news of the suicide of the suspected murderer Luigi Mangione. In fact, the BBC did not publish such news, and the suspect was in custody in the United States.
Following the incident, the BBC filed a complaint with Apple. In response, the company added a warning to users that the feature is still under development and may make mistakes.
Improvement plans and other AI capabilities
Apple introduced Apple Intelligence in June 2024, adding the ability to create personalised emojis, edit messages, etc. At the same time, it came as a surprise that Apple, which positions itself as a leader in privacy protection, is working with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its functions, including the Siri assistant.
Competition in the AI market
Following the success of ChatGPT, tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and Meta are actively working to improve their AI models. However, mistakes remain common. For example, in 2024, Google’s model mistakenly suggested using glue in pizza making.
Apple continues to invest in AI, but challenges related to accuracy and data protection remain key for the company.
