The leader of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, has delegated Vice President Han Zheng to attend the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Donald Trump, scheduled for 20 January. This became known from an official statement by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, published on 17 January.

According to the ministry’s statement, the Chinese side expresses its readiness to seek ways to build mutual understanding with the United States in the context of a new era. “We are committed to working with the new US administration to improve dialogue and contacts, effectively resolve differences, and expand mutually beneficial cooperation, which will contribute to the stability, health, and sustainability of Sino-US relations,” the statement said.

This step is evidence of China’s desire to maintain and expand diplomatic ties with the United States in the face of global changes and challenges. Sending a high-level representative to the inauguration also demonstrates Beijing’s intention to actively engage with the Trump administration from the first days of his presidency.
