Russian troops have suffered extremely heavy losses on the territory of Ukraine since the start of large-scale aggression on 24 February 2022. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as of 18 January 2025, the total losses of the Russian army amount to 817,160 soldiers. In particular, over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian troops killed another 1,340 Russian soldiers, The Kiev Independent reports.

Heavy equipment and other losses
In addition to human losses, Russia also lost a significant amount of equipment during this period: 9,803 tanks, 20,394 armoured combat vehicles, 34,325 vehicles and fuel tanks. Ukrainian forces also came under fire from 22,040 pieces of artillery, 1,262 missile systems with multifunctional launchers, more than a thousand air defence systems, as well as 369 aircraft and 331 helicopters.

Repelled attacks and the hottest spots on the frontline
According to the latest reports, 155 combat engagements took place between Ukrainian and Russian forces over the last day. The most intense fighting took place in the area of Pokrovsk, where Russian troops attempted to attack Ukrainian positions 64 times. However, most of the attacks were repelled, 49 of them on the first day, and 15 more are still ongoing.

Statement by the President of Ukraine
In December 2024, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that around 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed and over 370,000 wounded since the beginning of the war. These horrific figures show the scale of the conflict, which has been going on for almost three years.

This news once again confirms the high intensity of the war, which is causing irreparable losses for both the Ukrainian and Russian armies, and there are no preconditions for a quick end to the fighting.
