During a press conference, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he was ready to strengthen cooperation with the United States and Canada, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine and strengthening transatlantic relations. His statements were made during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, AFP reports.
Key highlights:
- Tusk stressed the need to maintain a high level of transatlantic partnership despite possible difficulties.
- He stressed the importance of united efforts within NATO to counter Russian aggression and ensure stability in the region.
Defence spending and Poland’s position
Poland plans to increase its defence spending to 4.7% of GDP in 2025, well above the NATO minimum of 2%. According to Tusk, these investments demonstrate Poland’s commitment to strengthening the Alliance’s defence capabilities.
“It is not my place to ask NATO partners to follow Poland’s example, but there is no doubt that a stronger collective defence would weaken the aggressor’s position,” the Polish prime minister said.
Polish-American military cooperation
Poland is actively investing in military equipment from the United States, including Apache attack helicopters and Abrams tanks. These purchases are part of Poland’s efforts to modernise its army and strengthen its defence capabilities in the face of growing threats.
Poland remains one of Ukraine’s key allies in the fight against Russian aggression, demonstrating its readiness to take active steps in the international arena to ensure security in the region.
