Today, 22 January, the whole country celebrates the Day of Unity of Ukraine, a symbol of the unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UPR) and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic (WUPR) into a single state. This holiday was officially established in 1999 to commemorate the great political and historical significance of this event.
Presidential address
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a speech on the occasion of the Day of Unity in Kyiv’s St Sophia Square. He stressed that Ukrainians demonstrate unity not only in declarations but also in actions.
“Millions of us are together. And together we were able to withstand, preserve Ukraine, repel the occupier, and hold back a large invasion. The strength of Ukrainians is hidden in this word – “together”,” Zelensky said.
A test of unity
The President reminded that 24 February 2022 was an important test for the unity of the nation.
“The day that became a decisive moment. It became such a challenge. A test of unity, maturity, faith in Ukraine. And we united… at the call from within,” the Head of State noted.
Ukraine is united
Volodymyr Zelenskyy assured that Ukraine will survive and its future will be peaceful and united.
“We will do everything so that we are not ashamed of them, so that they know that we have not repeated the mistakes of the past. And Ukraine exists. Ukraine is united. Peaceful. Unified,” he concluded.
Historical background
Unity Day is celebrated on the day of the proclamation of the Act of Unification of the UPR and ZUNR in 1919. This event was an important step towards the formation of a unified Ukrainian state.
