On the night of 24 January, Russia announced a massive drone attack on 11 regions of the country, Moscow and occupied Crimea. According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, a total of 121 drones were destroyed.

Details of the “attack”

The Russian Ministry of Defence claims that the air defence forces have allegedly successfully neutralised all the drones. Most of them were allegedly shot down over the following areas:

  • Bryansk region – 37 drones,
  • Ryazan region – 20,
  • Kursk and Saratov regions – 17 each,
  • Rostov region – 7,
  • Moscow and Belgorod regions – 6 each.

It was also reported that three drones were destroyed over Voronezh region, two over Tula, Lipetsk and Orel regions, one over Moscow and one over the occupied Crimea.

Although the Russian Ministry of Defence emphasises the “effectiveness” of air defence, the scale of the alleged attack raises questions about the real situation with airspace security in Russia.

Official sources in Russia have not provided any photographic or video evidence of the “destruction” of the drones. There is also no confirmation of the information from independent sources, and Russian users on social media are actively discussing possible gaps in air defence.
