President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu arrived in Kyiv on Saturday, 25 January, to hold a series of important meetings with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk. She announced this on her page on the social media platform X.

Main issues on the agenda
During the visit, the parties plan to discuss topical issues of bilateral cooperation, including:

  • Regional security in the face of common challenges;
  • The energy crisis caused by Russia’s actions in Transnistria;
  • Infrastructure connections between countries;
  • Trade and economic cooperation;
  • Joint efforts to join the European Union.

“Today I am in Kyiv for talks with President Zelensky. I brought a strong message of support for Ukraine and its people. Their courage ensures our peace,” Sandu said.

Particular attention will be paid to the energy crisis that has already affected the situation in Transnistria. As a result of Russia’s aggression, residents on the left bank of the Dniester have been left without heat and electricity, while the right bank is facing rising energy prices. According to Sandu, these challenges could have far-reaching consequences for regional stability.

Supporting Ukraine and joining the EU
The Moldovan president’s press service emphasises that Sandu’s visit is intended to reaffirm support for Ukraine, which has been resisting Russian aggression for three years, protecting not only its freedom but also the security of neighbouring countries, including Moldova.

In addition to the official meetings, Sandu will take part in a discussion at the New Europe Centre, a think tank specialising in foreign and security policy.
