The European beverage manufacturer Coca-Cola has announced a large-scale recall of products from the markets of Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, France and Luxembourg. The reason is the detection of excessive chlorate content in some drinks, including Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Fuze Tea, Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Bliss and Tropico, AFP reports.
What happened.
According to Coca-Cola European Partners Belgium, high levels of chlorate were found in drinks during tests at its Ghent production site. Although the exact numbers were not disclosed, the company called the amount significant.
“Most of the products that remain on store shelves have already been recalled and we are working to remove the rest,” the manufacturer said. The company is also cooperating with regulators in the affected countries.
What is the danger of chlorate?
According to the European Commission, chlorate gets into food when water is treated with disinfectants. The main source of this chemical is drinking water.
In 2015, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA ) warned that long-term consumption of chlorate could pose a health risk to children, especially those with iodine deficiency.
What actions is the company taking?
Coca-Cola emphasises that the recall is a preventive measure. The company emphasises the importance of consumer safety and is strengthening quality control procedures at its production facilities.
