Stefanishyna: The issue of Russia’s responsibility for war crimes is not subject to negotiation

Russia’s responsibility for war crimes committed on the territory of Ukraine cannot be negotiated. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna during a press conference in Brussels, Ukrinform reports .

The event was held before the EU’s General Affairs Council and was initiated by the Mission of Sweden to the EU. The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, European Commissioner for Enlargement Martha Kos and Swedish Minister for EU Affairs Jessica Rosenkrantz.

Russia must be held accountable
“We stressed responsibility for the crimes and war crimes that have been committed and continue to be committed in Ukraine. This issue cannot be negotiated. Russia must pay for the damage and destruction caused to my country at all levels. This must be done,” Stefanishyna emphasised.

She noted that Ukraine will work not only on political accountability, but also on concrete measures to ensure that those responsible are punished for their actions.

Gratitude to Europe for its support
The Vice Prime Minister expressed her gratitude to the EU institutions and European partners for their support of Ukraine. “Without such a consolidated position of the EU, it would have been much more difficult for Ukraine to survive the war and continue on the path of reforms,” Stefanishyna said.

The meeting of the EU’s General Affairs Council was another platform to discuss Russia’s responsibility for its actions in Ukraine and to consolidate European support for our country’s path to the EU.
