China has expressed its support for nuclear disarmament, saying that the United States and Russia, as the world’s two largest nuclear powers, should significantly reduce their arsenals. This was stated by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in response to US President Donald Trump’s proposal to start trilateral talks with Moscow and Beijing on denuclearisation, Barrons reports.
“The two nuclear powers with the largest arsenals must fulfil their nuclear disarmament obligations in good faith,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. According to Beijing, only after a significant reduction of nuclear warheads and carriers by the United States and Russia will there be conditions for other countries, including China, to join the global nuclear disarmament process.
During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Donald Trump announced his intention to achieve “denuclearisation” through trilateral talks between the US, Russia and China. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, said that “issues of strategic stability” could become a point of convergence with the new US administration.
