US President Donald Trump has said that the UK has “crossed the line” in trade relations, but hinted at the possibility of a compromise to avoid imposing tariffs, Reuters reports.
Trump has recently imposed stiff tariffs of 25% on Mexico and Canada and 10% on China, raising fears of a trade war. When asked about possible sanctions against Britain, the US president said:
“We will see how the situation develops. It is possible, but it will definitely happen with the European Union. Their trade policy is a real disaster.”
At the same time, Trump praised his relationship with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, stressing that they have a good relationship.
According to British statistics, in 2024, the country recorded a trade surplus in goods with the United States of £1.9 billion. The total volume of trade between the two countries was 294 billion pounds.
The UK government stressed the importance of its trade partnership with the US and expressed its readiness to cooperate with Washington to develop economic ties.
