Chrystia Freeland calls Trump’s tariffs “treason” and promises tough response

Former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has harshly criticised US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, calling it “economic treason”.

Freeland, who is the main candidate for the post of prime minister after Justin Trudeau’s resignation, said on CNN that Canada is not going to give in to Washington.

“This action is absolute nonsense. It is a betrayal of America’s closest ally, its neighbour and its best partner in the world. It is an act of economic warfare,” she said.

The United States imported more than $400 billion worth of goods from Canada in 2024, including oil, cars, and components. Trudeau, who has announced his resignation, said that Canada will introduce mirror duties of 25% starting on Tuesday in response to Trump’s actions.

Freeland assured that Washington would be shocked by Canada’s tough response, although the country does not want a conflict.
