Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has announced that on Tuesday, 6 February, he will attend the inauguration of the Israeli Embassy in the Republic of Moldova. During his visit to Chisinau, he will also hold meetings with President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Dorin Recean and Foreign Minister Mihai Popa
“The Republic of Moldova is a true friend of Israel, and the time has come to strengthen our relations,” Saar said. He added that Israel will invest in the development of bilateral relations with countries that support it in the international arena.
During the visit, the Minister will also visit the Jewish community of Moldova and lay flowers in memory of the victims of the Holocaust in Chisinau.
The decision to open an embassy in Moldova was made back in December 2024, when Saarland also announced the closure of its diplomatic mission in Ireland after Dublin supported South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice. In May 2024, Israel recalled its ambassador from Ireland after Ireland, Spain and Norway recognised Palestine as a state.
