The European Union is committed to cooperation with the United States, but is ready to firmly defend its own interests in response to Washington’s unfair decisions. This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a press conference in Brussels following an informal meeting of EU leaders to strengthen European defence, Ukrinform reports.
“Our transatlantic partnership is fundamental to peace, security and prosperity… The European Union is therefore preparing for a sharp but constructive dialogue with the United States,” von der Leyen said.
She noted that Europe is aware of possible challenges in relations with the United States. “If we become the target of arbitrary or unfair actions, the EU is ready to respond firmly. We have already seen how high tariffs have been imposed on Canada and Mexico… At the same time, we remain committed to multilateral commitments, in particular in the area of development and climate change,” the EC President said.
Von der Leyen also emphasised that Europe is ready to tackle its internal challenges and work to strengthen its economy. The main principles of economic development are set out in the EU’s Competitive Compass, which defines a roadmap for maintaining the region’s competitiveness.
