Democratic Senator Brian Schatz has announced a filibuster of all US President Donald Trump’s nominees for positions in the State Department. This decision was a response to the possible disbanding of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), NBC News reports.

According to Schatz, the liquidation of USAID is against the law and threatens US national security. He stressed that the agency was created by federal law and funded by Congress, so its cancellation is impossible without the appropriate legislative procedure.

“Until these authoritarian decisions are reversed and USAID resumes its work, I am blocking all of Trump’s nominees for the State Department. This will lead to chaos and serious consequences around the world,” the senator said.

While Senate confirmation requires a majority vote, Democrats can significantly slow down the process, making it more difficult for the Trump administration. The Republicans currently hold 53 seats, which gives them an advantage but does not guarantee quick consideration of nominations.
