The sanctions pressure on Russia is currently rated at only 3 points out of 10, but the US is ready to significantly increase restrictions to force the Kremlin to end its war against Ukraine. Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg said this, The New York Post reports.
According to him, the US sanctions, in particular those related to the Russian energy sector, are now nominally twice as strong as before, but their potential is far from being exhausted.
“There is a lot of room for tighter sanctions, especially in the area of oil production and exports. If anyone understands the leverage, it’s President Donald Trump,” Kellogg said.
Earlier, Trump said that the US would increase sanctions pressure if Moscow did not agree to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.
The sanctions have already caused significant damage to the Russian economy, but their further tightening could critically affect the Kremlin’s key sources of revenue.
