US tech giant Meta is launching mass layoffs that will affect thousands of employees in the US, Europe, Asia and Africa. Reuters reports this with reference to an internal company document.
According to Meta’s statement, employees in most countries will receive official layoff notices from 5am local time on 10 February. However, in some countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, such notifications will be sent from 11 to 18 February.
However, employees in France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands will avoid dismissal due to the peculiarities of local labour laws.
Dismissal due to poor performance
Janelle Gale, Meta’s vice president of human resources, explained that the layoffs are due to “low productivity” of some employees.
Last month, Meta officially confirmed that it plans to lay off about 5% of its “worst performers”, but some of the vacant positions will be reopened for new professionals.
In addition, the company will accelerate the process of hiring engineers in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence, which indicates a change in Meta’s development priorities.
