The National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine (NSDC) decided to impose sanctions on former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, leader of the European Solidarity party, at a meeting on 12 February. According to Forbes Ukraine, the details of these sanctions were not specified.
In a Facebook post, Petro Poroshenko condemned the decision, calling it “unconstitutional” and “politically motivated”, and pointed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s direct involvement in it. He stated that Zelenskyy was personally behind the decision.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the NSDC meeting in his daily video address, noting the need to block the funds received from the sale of Ukraine’s interests and security. “The billions that have been earned by selling Ukraine should be blocked and used to protect the country and its citizens,” he said, although he did not provide specific figures or details.
The statement also mentions the treason charges brought against Poroshenko on the eve of the Russian invasion in 2021. According to the SBU, Poroshenko was allegedly involved in a scheme to change coal supplies, which was aimed at replacing coal from South Africa with coal from the occupied Donbas, which was beneficial to Viktor Medvedchuk, the head of the political council of the OPFL party.
Petro Poroshenko was President of Ukraine from 2014 to 2019.
