In an article for Maariv, Amit Yagur, former deputy head of the IDF’s Palestine Division, highlighted six key areas where there is a discrepancy between official statements and the real situation in Israel. Yagur noted that, despite the declared readiness for tough measures, in reality, Israel is not using all possible resources to change the rules of the game.

One of these unused resources is the support of former US President Donald Trump, which, according to Yahur, could help to free hostages and achieve strategic goals in the region. In particular, Yagur criticises Israel’s approach to hostage exchange, where, according to him, the government continues to act in a “business as usual” manner, without using American support to strengthen its position.

Other key points identified by Yagur include the commitment to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, which is eventually expanded regardless of claims of renewed hostilities, and the shortcomings in establishing a safe zone between Gaza and Israel.

In addition, Yagour points out the problems with the security policy towards Hezbollah, arguing that despite the group’s declared losses, arms smuggling and political influence in Lebanon continue to pose a threat.

Amit Yahur calls for the use of all available strategic assets to revise political approaches and strengthen security on all fronts, including by changing the “holiday” exchanges with Hamas and rethinking engagement with the Palestinian Authority and regional actors.
