Israel will continue to maintain a buffer zone in Syria and maintain its presence in the West Bank with the support of the Donald Trump administration, despite pressure from the EU and the UN. This is reported by The Jerusalem Post.

According to sources, Trump supports Israel’s position despite the EU and UN’s efforts to normalise relations with the new Syrian regime of Ahmed al-Sharaa. Israel fears that this government may be a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”, so it has no plans to retreat from the buffer zone in the near future.

It is expected that even if the international community begins to put pressure on Israel, Trump’s support will allow Israeli forces to remain in the region for many years to come. In addition, al-Sharaa has not yet announced elections, which may not be held until 2029.

Israel’s presence in Lebanon and the West Bank

Along with Syria, the Israeli army may remain in Jenin even after the main phase of the operation in the West Bank is over. According to sources, many militants have already fled the region, but the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) does not intend to withdraw from the area completely, which means a change in the approach to security in Samaria.

In addition, Israel will retain five key defensive positions on the border with Lebanon, despite the deadline of 18 February for withdrawal. Although official Beirut denies any agreements, sources say that both Lebanon and the United States have agreed to this format, despite Hezbollah’s objections.

The IDF will also retain the right to strike Hezbollah militants who may return to southern Lebanon under the guise of civilians. According to sources, Israeli drones are already tracking weapons caches and are ready to strike in case of violation of the agreement.

Thus, Israel is preparing for a long-term presence in strategic areas, relying on US support, despite growing pressure from the international community.
