The SBU CI exposed and detained a 35-year-old FSB agent who was adjusting Russian air strikes on Ukrainian military positions in Mykolaiv. This was reported by the SBU press service on Friday, 14 February.
From colony to FSB agents
It turned out that before the full-scale invasion, the detainee was serving a sentence for serious crimes in a penal institution in Kherson. After the occupation of the city, the Russians transferred him to a colony in the Russian Federation, where he was recruited by an FSB officer.
On the instructions of the aggressor country’s intelligence services, the agent arrived in Mykolaiv via third countries and began gathering intelligence.
How did the agent work?
The main goal of the Russian intelligence officer was to identify the locations of the Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel and military equipment in frontline Mykolaiv.
The perpetrator was walking around certain areas of the city, covertly photographing possible positions of the Ukrainian military, and asking his friends for important information during everyday conversations.
However, SBU counterintelligence exposed the occupiers’ plans at the initial stage and documented the agent’s actions.
Detention and consequences
The SBU conducted a special operation to detain a hostile adjuster at his place of residence. During the search, the SBU seized his mobile phone, which he used to contact his Russian handler.
Investigators have already served him with a notice of suspicion. He is currently in custody. The offender faces up to 12 years in prison.
