On 15 February, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Brazilian Presidential Chief Foreign Policy Advisor Celso Amorim met on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. Following the meeting, the parties issued a joint statement on ways to resolve the war in Ukraine.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China on 16 February.

A diplomatic initiative by Beijing and Brazil

According to the statement, China and Brazil fully support the work of the Friends of Peace group and will continue to play a constructive role in the political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that Beijing and Brazil are “great world powers and representatives of the Global South” that seek to promote stability and development in the world.

Context of the statement

⚡ China and Brazil have repeatedly called for talks between Kyiv and Moscow, but their proposals are controversial.

⚡ The Friends of Peace group is an initiative created to find diplomatic ways to end the war in Ukraine.

⚡ The Chinese side had previously presented a 12-point “peace plan”, which Ukraine criticised for not requiring Russia to withdraw its troops.

The Munich conference is ongoing, and further statements on the conflict are possible.
