The Washington Post: EU ready to commit several teams to possible mission to Ukraine
European countries may send 25,000 to 30,000 troops to Ukraine as part of a potential ceasefire agreement between Kyiv and Moscow. This was reported by The Washington Post on Monday, 17 February.
According to the publication, this figure was announced in response to a request from the United States, which asked its European partners to detail the possibilities of supporting Ukraine.
Where can the European military be deployed?
According to the sources, the troops will not be deployed along the front line, but “will be ready to demonstrate force if Russian troops resume active hostilities”.
In addition, the European military can be supported by additional forces outside Ukraine, which will allow for a rapid build-up if necessary.
Which countries are ready to send military personnel?
The most detailed military planning for such a mission has been carried out by France. Paris may send up to 10,000 troops. Other European countries have not yet given exact figures, but according to preliminary estimates, the total contingent could be 25-30,000 troops.
Is it possible to involve peacekeeping forces?
Earlier, it was reported that if a ceasefire agreement is signed between Ukraine and Russia, its implementation could be monitored by peacekeeping forces from international partners. According to analysts, a contingent of 100,000 troops may be needed to effectively carry out the mission.
However, so far, the issue of sending European troops is only at the discussion stage.
