Western countries will have to gradually lift sanctions against Russia if the war in Ukraine is resolved. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a press conference after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Riyadh. This was reported by EADaily.

Washington: “Compromises are needed to end the conflict”

Answering journalists’ questions about the possible easing of restrictions, Rubio noted that the sanctions were imposed “as a result of the conflict”.

“All this is the result of this conflict [in Ukraine]. Today, there are sanctions that have been imposed because of this war. Therefore, if we are talking about ending it, it is necessary for all parties to make concessions,” the US Secretary of State said.

The role of the European Union in the negotiations

According to Rubio, the issue of lifting sanctions concerns not only the United States, but also the European Union, which also imposed restrictions on Russia.

“There are other parties that have imposed sanctions. The EU will also have to sit down at the negotiating table, because they also have sanctions that have been imposed,” the State Department head stressed.

What’s next?

Rubio’s statement indicates that the West may revise its sanctions policy if a truce or peace agreement is reached. This issue will be one of the main issues in the next negotiations between the US, Russia and the EU.

The sanctions against Moscow include restrictions in the energy sector, financial restrictions and personal measures against high-ranking officials and oligarchs.
