Hamas militants handed over to Israel the bodies of four dead hostages, including two young children. This was reported by The Times of Israel with reference to the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces).
Transfer of bodies with a delay and a political message
The transfer procedure began on the morning of 20 February, but Hamas delayed the process by displaying the coffins of the dead on a symbolic “stage”. Nearby, the militants placed posters with the words “Made in the USA”, hinting at Washington’s responsibility for Israeli air strikes.
The militants claim that the hostages were killed by an Israeli air strike that used US missiles.
Who is among the dead?
According to the report, among the dead:
- Shiri Bibas is an Israeli woman who was abducted with her two young sons during the 7 October attack.
- A nine-month-old boy and his five-year-old brother.
- Oded Lifshitz (83) is an Israeli citizen who was also captured during the invasion.
The bodies were handed over to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross, after which the Israeli army confirmed their identification. Hamas is expected to hand over six more hostages to Israel on Saturday, 22 February.
Agreement between Israel and Hamas
This exchange is part of an agreement concluded more than a month ago with the mediation of international partners. In accordance with the agreement:
- Hamas hands over hostages and bodies
- Israel releases Palestinian prisoners
Despite this, the parties have not reached a long-term ceasefire, and the situation in the region remains extremely tense.
