NATO expands military infrastructure in Eastern Europe

The North Atlantic Alliance is considering the construction of a strategic pipeline connecting Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, providing fast delivery of fuel for military aircraft. This should increase NATO’s combat readiness in the event of a potential conflict with Russia, Der Spiegel reports, citing internal Bundeswehr documents.

NATO’s current pipeline system is outdated and ends in western Germany, making logistics difficult in the event of a military threat. The Bundeswehr document points to “serious problems with the supply of fuel” for troops that could be deployed to the Alliance’s eastern flank.

Key details of the project:

  • Budget: €21 billion
  • Route: Germany – Poland – Czech Republic
  • Implementation period: major works to be completed by 2035

What does NATO say?
There has been no official response from NATO or the German Ministry of Defence. At the same time, analysts say that the pipeline will become the backbone of NATO’s defence logistics in the region.

NATO is stepping up preparations for a possible conflict in Europe. Will the pipeline be another step towards the militarisation of the region?
