During his annual State of the Union address, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that without Budapest’s consent, Ukraine would never become an EU member. He also hinted that after the war ends, Moscow will again turn Ukraine into a “buffer zone”. This was reported by AP.
“Ukraine will not become a member of the EU against the will of the Hungarians”
“Ukraine will not become an EU member unless Hungary wants it to. Its accession will destroy not only our farmers, but the entire economy of the country,” Orban said.
In the EU, new members require the unanimous support of all 27 countries to be accepted. Hungary has repeatedly blocked important decisions to help Ukraine, but eventually agreed to sanctions against Russia.
Ukraine, or “what is left of it”, will not become a NATO member
Orban also questioned Ukraine’s future as an independent state.
“This war is not about Ukraine, but about the territory that was a buffer zone between NATO and Russia. Ukraine, or what is left of it, will become such a zone again. It will not be a NATO member,” the Hungarian prime minister said.
Orban criticises the US and praises Trump
The Hungarian Prime Minister criticised the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), accusing it of funding opposition initiatives in Budapest. He also expressed support for Donald Trump, who opposes Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
Orban continues to block Kyiv’s European integration initiatives and strengthen ties with the Kremlin. At the same time, his position may change under pressure from the EU, as has happened many times before.
