The United States voted against the UN resolution condemning Russia for the war in Ukraine. As Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained in an interview with Breitbart News, this document does not contribute to a peaceful settlement, but only complicates efforts to organise talks between Kyiv and Moscow.

“Frankly speaking, we do not consider it appropriate to make decisions at the UN that are antagonistic to either side. We tried to bring Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table. Unfortunately, Kyiv did not agree and decided to go its own way. So we went to the Security Council with our compromise draft resolution, which we believe is fair and simply recognises that war is a horror,” Rubio said.

He stressed that Donald Trump’s administration is committed to ending the conflict:

“The president wants it to end yesterday. We should all be glad that Trump is a president of peace. He is not fuelling new wars, but seeking to end the ones that are already underway. His goal is to end suffering, not to increase it,” the Secretary of State stressed.

Rubio also confirmed that Washington is in talks with Russia:

“Last week we met with the Russians. Some Europeans say that Putin is not interested in ending the war. However, they said they were ready to do so under certain conditions. We have not yet discussed what they are. The next step is to hold a new meeting in the right format to determine what is needed to end the war. And, of course, we must ask Ukraine the same question, because the war cannot end without the consent of both sides,” Rubio added.
