After the summit in London, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that European leaders would soon meet with US President Donald Trump to work together on an agreed plan to end the war in Ukraine. This was reported by Sky News.
“We need to cooperate with America. We have agreed that we will meet with the American president very soon to work together until we have a unified plan,” Starmer said.
According to him, the United Kingdom, France and a number of other countries have already agreed to work with Ukraine to develop a clear plan to end the fighting, which will be agreed with the United States for further implementation.
As part of his support for Ukraine, Starmer also announced the allocation of £1.6 billion for the purchase of more than 5,000 air defence missiles. The production of these missiles is planned to be launched in Belfast, which will create additional jobs in the British defence sector.
“This will strengthen Ukraine and put it in the best position to negotiate from a position of strength,” the British prime minister said.
The context for the intensification of negotiations was the harsh statements and public dispute in the White House between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 28 February. Trump accused Zelenskyy of “gambling with World War III”.
This diplomatic incident caused a wide response in the international media, which called the skirmish unprecedented and could affect the further course of diplomatic processes around Ukraine.
It is expected that the preparation of a joint peace plan between Western allies and the United States will be a key topic of the upcoming meeting with the Trump administration.
