American film director Sean Baker has triumphantly completed the Oscars 2025 ceremony, winning four awards for his film Anora. In doing so, he repeated Walt Disney’s 1954 record for the most wins in one night.

Baker received statuettes for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing.

What is the film “Anora” about?
The film tells the story of a sex worker from New York who unexpectedly gets a chance for a different life after marrying a wealthy Russian client.

The film stars 25-year-old Mikey Madison, who won the Best Actress award, beating out favourite Demi Moore (The Substance). On stage, Madison thanked the sex worker community and promised to continue to support their rights.

Sensational success of a low-budget film
“Anora was made for just $6 million, a paltry budget for Hollywood. Nevertheless, it defeated such powerful competitors as Conclave, The Brutalist and the massive musical Wicked.

The film has already grossed $40 million at the global box office, which is impressive for an independent film. For comparison, Wicked earned $728 million.

“If you want to make independent films, don’t stop! This triumph is proof that we need these films,” Baker said in his speech.
