Hungary has once again blocked a joint initiative of the European Union, which provided for the provision of security guarantees to Ukraine and continued military support. According to Politico, the decision was made during a meeting of EU ambassadors on Friday.
The draft document referred to the EU’s commitment to continue to assist Kyiv and to consider possible long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. However, Hungary voted against it, which was another manifestation of disagreements within the bloc over support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
In parallel with the scandal surrounding the document, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that his country was suspending financial and military assistance to Ukraine, publicly criticising the concept of “peace through strength” and calling it ineffective.
Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban accused Brussels of financing a “hopeless war” in Ukraine and threatened to block any new EU statements in support of Kyiv.
These actions increase internal tensions in the EU, threatening consolidated support for Ukraine and complicating joint decision-making in the security and defence sector.
European leaders have repeatedly emphasised that continued EU unity is critical to continuing to assist Ukraine and deter Russian aggression.
