US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the war in Ukraine is in fact a proxy conflict between Washington and Moscow, and that President Donald Trump’s attempts to stop the fighting are quite natural. He voiced this position in an interview with Fox News after the scandalous meeting between Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. This was reported by The Kyiv Independent.
“This is not a strategy, but a war of attrition”
Rubio noted that the conflict has reached a deadlock, and supporting Ukraine without a clear strategy makes no sense. In his opinion, the US should look for ways to peace instead of endlessly supplying Kyiv with weapons.
His words were immediately picked up by the Russian media, which has long positioned the war as Russia’s confrontation with the West.
Negotiations with Russia and the split with Kyiv
Rubio confirmed that Washington has already held talks with Moscow on a possible end to the war. According to him, the Russians are interested in negotiations, but Ukraine refuses to engage in dialogue, which complicates a peaceful settlement.
“We asked the Ukrainians not to sabotage these talks,” the secretary of state stressed, criticising Zelensky for his reaction to Vance’s statements about Russia’s readiness to compromise.
Washington cuts off military aid to Ukraine
On the same day, the Trump administration made another high-profile decision to stop providing intelligence to Kyiv, which will make it much more difficult for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to conduct combat operations.
In addition, the United States has officially announced a freeze on military aid to Ukraine, which could significantly change the balance of power at the front.
“This is a war that has cost billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lives. President Trump is trying to find a way to stop it,” Rubio concluded.
