On the night of 11 March, Russia suffered a large-scale drone attack. The Russian Ministry of Defence said there were more than 300 drones, of which 337 were allegedly shot down.

According to the Russian agency, the largest number of UAVs was recorded over Moscow Oblast (91 drones), Kursk Oblast (126), Bryansk Oblast (38), Belgorod Oblast (25), Ryazan Oblast (22) and Kaluga Oblast (10). Single drones were also allegedly shot down in Lipetsk, Orel, Voronezh and Nizhny Novgorod regions.

The attack temporarily shut down Moscow’s Zhukovsky, Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports. In addition, the railway infrastructure at Domodedovo station was damaged. According to Rosaviatsia, due to the introduction of the Carpet Plan, both airports were restricted and flights both departing and arriving were delayed.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that six drones were shot down at first, followed by four more. However, videos have appeared on social media showing a fire on the ground, which may indicate that one or more drones were hit.

Russian Telegram channels also reported that Plan Carpet was also implemented at Nizhny Novgorod’s Strigin airport, which may indicate a wider scale of the attack.

Residents of Ryazan report explosions near the Dyagilevo military airfield, where Russian strategic aviation is based.
