The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has filed a lawsuit with the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) seeking sanctions against a Russian aluminium company and its owner. If the claim is upheld, the state will get 440,000 tonnes of bauxite and 110,000 tonnes of metallurgical alumina.

This was announced by the Prosecutor General’s Office on Thursday, 13 March.

What is known about the assets?

  • The ultimate owner of the raw materials is a sanctioned Russian oligarch who owns the world’s largest aluminium plant.
  • The aluminium products were supplied to the Russian military-industrial complex, which produces military equipment, weapons and ammunition for the Russian army.
  • The raw materials were stored in the warehouses of the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant, which was previously owned by a Russian businessman.

Although the official report does not name the oligarch, the circumstances of the case point to Oleg Deripaska, a well-known Russian billionaire with ties to the Kremlin.

Criminal proceedings and sanctions

Law enforcers are conducting a pre-trial investigation under Article 110-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (financing actions aimed at overthrowing the constitutional order).

  • At the end of January, the court had already seized Deripaska’s assets in Ukraine worth over UAH 2 billion.
  • The businessman was served with a notice of suspicion of war financing in absentia.
  • Earlier, Ukraine nationalised all of Deripaska’s plants located in different regions of the country.

What’s next?

If the HACCU upholds the claim of the Ministry of Justice, the raw material reserves will officially become the property of Ukraine. This will be another blow to the Russian oligarchy, which finances the Kremlin’s military machine.
