A unique late 15th-century siddur from Northern Germany, which belonged to the “Saint of Ruzhyn”

The Siddur, established in the late 15th century in Northern Germany, was owned by the prominent Hasidic leader of Israel, Friedman Ruzhin (1796-1850), known as the “Saint of Ruzhin”. Born in Pogrebishche (Russian Empire) and dying in Sadgora (Austria), this rebbe became famous for the royal splendour of his court. In the 1840s, Czar Nicholas I imprisoned him for two years on charges of murder, but after his release, Friedman fled to Austria. In Sadhora (now the outskirts of Chernivtsi), he rebuilt his court, attracting thousands of followers, supported Hasidim in Israel, and laid the foundation for the Tifereth Israel synagogue.
