On the night of 3 April, Russian troops launched another massive attack on Ukraine using Shahed attack drones and imitation drones. According to the Ukrainian Air Force Command, 39 drones were launched, of which 28 were destroyed by air defence forces.
Where the drones were flying from
The attack was carried out from the south and east of Russia – from the areas of the cities of Millerovo, Kursk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk. This has become a common tactic of the Russian military, which launches Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 from border regions.
Three regions were affected
The night attack affected Kharkiv, Donetsk and Dnipro regions. The nature and extent of the damage is being clarified, but preliminary information suggests that mass casualties were avoided.
The Air Force also reported 7 imitator drones that were not detected by radar but did not cause any damage. Such drones are often used by the Russians as “traps” to reconnoiter Ukrainian air defences or to deplete them.
How the defence worked
The air strike was repelled by units of anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare (EW) and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Defence Forces. Such a multi-level defence system allows to effectively shoot down most drones, even during sophisticated attacks using simulated means.
Despite the challenges, Ukrainian air defence once again demonstrates high efficiency, protecting cities and critical infrastructure from daily air terror.
